Theme: Amazing Astronomy: This month, we’re reaching for the stars at Discovery Place Kids – Rockingham! Join us as we explore the wonders of space in our Amazing Astronomy programs. Kids will learn about the science of the night sky, from the phases of the moon to the skills astronaut’s need for space exploration!  

Special Programs (1:30 p.m. on select days) 

Join us for fun themed activities during the week all month long.

January 6 – 12: Astronaut Training Academy: Do you have what it takes to become an astronaut? Join us for a hands-on program where you’ll complete physical exercises, test your skills with space-themed tasks, and experience the challenges of working in astronaut gear! Get ready to train like space explorers! 

January 14 – 19: Moon Phases Magic: Why does the moon change in the night sky? Come explore the phases of the moon with a fun demonstration and hands-on craft. Learn how the moon orbits Earth and discover the science behind its magical glow! 

January 20 – 26: Cool Constellations: Embark on a journey through the stars as we explore the shapes and stories of famous constellations! Using star maps as inspiration, kids will create their own constellation art and learn how ancient cultures used constellations to navigate and tell stories! 

January 28 – 31: Rocket Power: Blast off into the world of rockets as we discover how rockets work and why they’re essential for space exploration. Then, build your own paper rocket and launch it to see how far it can soar. Get ready to aim for the stars!  

Special Events 

January 20: Martin Luther King Jr. Day 

Join us at the Sandhills Stage at 1:30 p.m. for a special story time to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 

January 21: Monthly Themed Member Hour 

Time: During Member Hour from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. 

Blast off with us for an interactive story time featuring Mousetranaut by Mark Kelly! Follow the adventure of a courageous little mouse who boards a space shuttle and comes to the rescue when the astronauts need help. After the reading, get creative with making your own astronaut!

Puppet Show 

January Show: Tortoise and the Hare: A non-traditional spin on a beloved traditional story! 

Science Show (Every Day 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.)    

Join us at the Science Lab all month for science experiments. 

Story Time (Sundays at 1:30 p.m.) 

 Join us for story time as we read some of our favorite books: 

  • Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me by Eric Carle 
  • Aliens Love Underpants by Claire Freedman & Ben Cort 
  • Goldilocks and the Three Martians by Stu Smith 
  • Breakfast Moon by Meg Gower 

Big Fun (Every Day 11:45 & 4:15 p.m.)   

Big Fun is where YOU are the star of the show! Children and adults are invited to move and groove to some of our favorite songs. Put your dancing shoes on and join us for this daily dance party!
